Interview: José Ramón Couso organises the 2nd edition of the ICAM Executive Programme

José Ramon Couso, partner in the banking and finance practice, is organising the second edition of the Executive Programme in Corporate Governance launched by ICAM together with Alicia Muñoz Lombardía. Couso is also president of ICAM's Banking Law section.

In an interview with Confilegal, he explains that what led him to take on the management of the programme for the second year was ‘a clear demand from colleagues and legal professionals: they wanted continuous training, but above all practical training that went beyond legal theory’.

Compared to the previous edition, Couso comments that ‘there are several elements that mark a leap in quality. The first is parity: we wanted there to be as many women as men, both among speakers and students. The second is the more intense participation of headhunters. The third point is the visits to institutions and companies. And finally, we will devote a full day to simulating the holding of a board meeting.’

Taking advantage of his participation as organiser of this edition, our expert also reflects on the current state of corporate governance:The key point is governance. Companies can no longer limit themselves to looking at quarterly results; they must think about the long term and their impact on society. Transparency, respect for the environment and social responsibility are now an integral part of good management.

Our lawyer also points out that the main challenge currently facing corporate governance is ‘resistance to change. Many companies have already internalised good governance practices, but there is still a long way to go. The most inspiring thing is to listen to those who have led transformation processes in their companies: their difficulties, their lessons learned and the results obtained.’
